Standard alarms just beep.
We wake you up.

SafetyGuard is an edge-AI device that monitors driver fatigue locally and triggers an immediate, multi-sensory Sound + Scent jolt to break microsleeps instantly.

Recognition

Award-Winning Project

AI Safety Guard (AI Drowsiness Detection System) by Pattricia Ruth Das of Southern Cross University has been recognised by two of Australia's leading innovation programs.

Winner — Student Category

2026 Queensland iAwards · Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) · Sponsored by Deloitte

The AI Drowsiness Detection System by Southern Cross University was named the winner of the Student category at the 2026 QLD iAwards, announced on 29 July 2026. The iAwards are Australia's longest-running innovation recognition program, uncovering, recognising and rewarding excellence in Australian innovation.

"The Multi-Sensory Driver Drowsiness Detection Device is a privacy-first, edge-AI system. By continuously monitoring eye closure, yawning, and head droop, it detects driver fatigue in real-time. Upon detection, it triggers an immediate, simultaneous sound alarm and scent release, providing a fail-safe awakening mechanism to prevent fatal road accidents." — AIIA, 2026 QLD iAwards media release

As a state winner, the project progressed to compete for the National iAwards title.

Winner — Lead Judges' Choice Award

35th INCITE Awards

The inaugural Lead Judges' Choice Award was new in this year's program, with Pattricia Ruth Das of Southern Cross University named the winner for her project AI Safety Guard — a privacy-first, multi-sensory detection device that monitors driver fatigue using real-time computer vision.

Inspired by a family member's experience, this solution detects eye closure, yawning, and head droop, which triggers an immediate, simultaneous sound alarm and scent release — providing a fail-safe awakening mechanism to prevent fatal accidents.

AI Safety Guard: Design, Prototype Implementation, and Validation Roadmap for a Privacy-Preserving Multi-Sensory Edge-AI Driver Drowsiness System

The paper frames driver drowsiness as a persistent road-safety problem that is hard to measure because incidents are intermittent and often unreported. It presents a low-cost edge-AI prototype that pairs non-contact facial-landmark analysis — prolonged eye closure, mouth opening and yawning, and head-pose deviation — with temporal decision fusion to trigger an audible alert and an optional atomised scent pulse. Unlike cloud-based monitoring, all camera processing happens locally, retaining no video and recording only minimal local event data.

The Problem

The Fatal Flaw of "Just Beeping"

Current dashboard systems rely entirely on auditory alerts, but deeply fatigued drivers literally sleep through noise due to sensory habituation. The data highlights a critical need for a new approach.

16-21% of Fatal Crashes

Are estimated to involve a drowsy driver. At 55 mph, a brief 4-second microsleep means traveling the length of a football field entirely blind.

Auditory Habituation

During severe cognitive fatigue, the brain's "sensory gating" actively suppresses repetitive noises (like constant dashboard beeps), rendering audio alarms useless.

The Olfactory Bypass

Unlike sight or sound, scent bypasses the thalamus and routes directly to the amygdala, triggering involuntary, immediate physiological and emotional arousal.

Our Aim

Immediate Cognitive Intervention

To engineer an affordable, completely offline edge device that bypasses the brain's auditory filters.

By combining sub-second computer vision with a physical olfactory (scent) shock, we aim to drastically reduce the reaction time of a driver waking from a microsleep event.

Project Proposal

A Retrofittable Kit for Commercial Fleets

We propose building a plug-and-play hardware module that logistics companies can install in any vehicle, requiring zero wearables for the driver.

1. Local Vision AI

Implement MediaPipe Face Landmarker on a Raspberry Pi to track Eye Aspect Ratio (EAR) at 15+ FPS. Completely offline.

2. Olfactory Actuation

Wire GPIO relays to a physical DC atomizer. Trigger a 2-second burst of peppermint scent simultaneously with an audio alarm.

3. Safe-By-Design

Engineer strict software limits: hard-coded 60-second cooldown lockouts to prevent cabin saturation, plus manual hardware overrides.
